Donnelly Statement on President’s Tariff Announcement

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly released the following statement after President Trump signed Section 232 proclamations regarding steel and aluminum.

Donnelly said, “Trade is critical for Indiana’s economy—from our manufacturers to our farmers—but it must be fair. For too long Hoosier workers have fought unfair competition from countries like China. I’m pleased that President Trump is taking action, and I plan to carefully review the details of his proclamations. It’s important that we get this policy right, so that American steel and aluminum producers and their workers can compete on a level playing field and continue to support good-paying jobs.”

Background:

  • Donnelly has long fought for a level playing field for American steelworkers.
  • Donnelly has long supported export promotion efforts, including the Export-Import Bank, the Manufacturing Extension Partnership, and the CREAATE Act, to help Hoosier farmers and manufacturers access international markets and sell their products to customers across the globe.
  • Donnelly helped enact the Leveling the Playing Field Act and ENFORCE Act to ensure American companies can fight unfair trade practices before the damage is already done. He also has:
    • testified in-person at the International Trade Commission in support of Indiana’s steel industry;
    • urged the Administration several times to complete its 232 investigation; and
    • sent numerous letters in support of U.S. trade enforcement efforts to crack down on the illegal dumping and subsidizing of unfairly traded steel and aluminum products.
