Donnelly Meets with Retired Hoosier Miners in Washington, D.C.
Senator supports bipartisan Miners Protection Act
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly joined retired miners from Indiana as they rallied in support of the Miners Protection Act. The bipartisan legislation would protect the health and pension benefits of thousands of American miners.
Donnelly said, “I was pleased to meet retired Hoosier miners as they rallied for action on the bipartisan Miners Protection Act – legislation I support and think should be considered and passed by the Senate immediately. Miners deserve the benefits they were promised and earned, and I will continue standing with them and pushing for passage of the Miners Protection Act.”

In Indiana, roughly 3,000 retired miners are receiving pension benefits and 1,500 are receiving health benefits. Donnelly spoke in support of the Miners Protection Act on the Senate floor in June, joining a bipartisan group of Senators calling for the Senate to act. Subsequently, Donnelly and the senators received a commitment that the bill will see committee action this fall. The Senate Finance Committee is expected to vote on the bill next week.
