Donnelly Continues Push for Miners Benefits in Senate Floor Speech

Senator fighting for action on miner health benefits, which must be addressed by April 28th

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly spoke on the Senate floor today continuing his advocacy for Hoosier miners. Donnelly has been a vocal proponent of the bipartisan Miners Protection Act, which would protect the health and pension benefits of thousands of American miners, including thousands of retired Hoosier miners. Congress must act by April 28 to ensure our retired miners get the health care benefits they earned.

Donnelly said, in part, in his speech, “Retirees are already receiving letters telling them their medical insurance will soon run out… Let’s do the right thing and enact a permanent solution. I strongly urge my colleagues to take action immediately and ensure our retired miners receive the health benefits that were promised to them by the United States government.”

Donnelly also spoke in support of the Miners Protection Act on the Senate floor in June 2016, joining a bipartisan group of Senators calling for the Senate to act. He met with miners in Washington, D.C., in September 2016, and sent a letter to leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate in November calling for passage of the legislation. He helped re-introduce the bipartisan Miners Protection Act earlier this year.
