Indianapolis, Ind. – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly’s office announced that Indiana students interested in pursuing a nomination to one of our nation’s service academies must submit their nomination application to the Senator’s office by 6:00 PM EDT on Friday, September 14, 2018. Donnelly said, “I welcome interested Hoosier students to apply for a congressional nomination to a U.S. Service Academy. Our nation’s prestigious service academies provide young men and women with a top-quality college education and prepare them for successful careers as officers in the military. As U.S. Senator, it is my honor to nominate outstanding young Hoosiers to the Armed Forces’ service academies each year.”
Each year, Donnelly has an opportunity to nominate Hoosiers for admittance to service academies: the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY; the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, CO; the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY; and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, CT.
Candidates are evaluated using a competitive system recommended by the academies. The selection process includes a personal interview, review of the student’s application, essays, academic records, letters of recommendation, community involvement, character, and leadership experience. A congressional nomination is not a guarantee of admission. The final decision will be made by the academy itself following a “whole-person” evaluation that takes into account a candidate’s character, scholarship, leadership, physical aptitude, medical fitness, goals, and motivation.
