Donnelly wants to improve access to mental health services for veterans
Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly says too many veterans continue to take their own lives, and the government needs to do more to stop it.
Donnelly talked to veterans and their families Monday at the Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis and said improving access to mental health services is one of his key issues.
He says about 20 veterans die by suicide each day, and only 6 of those 20 reach out to the VA for help.
"That's our job, to make sure every vet knows they're loved, cared about and if they're feeling challenged that we're here for them and that you have earned health care, this facility, that these doctors and nurses love you and are care about you and we want to make sure we get it right, so, part of our ongoing effort is to find the 14 every day," Donnelly said.
Donnelly says he wants to double the number of suicide hotline locations to reach out to veterans, their families and loved ones.
