Donnelly Urges Indiana Residents to Work to Reverse New Law
The Indiana Democrat says in a 47-second statement posted on Facebook that he's heard from a lot of people who say they are disappointed in the bill Gov. Mike Pence signed last week, saying he is disappointed too. He says he wants people outside Indiana to know that it is "the Hoosier hospitality state" where everyone is welcome. He didn't say how he would try to reverse the law.
Pence defended the law while appearing Sunday on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos," saying it is not about discrimination, but about empowering people to confront "government overreach."
Pence did not answer directly when asked six times whether under the law it would be legal for a merchant to refuse to serve gay customers.
Asked if he would be willing to add sexual orientation to the list of characteristics against which discrimination is illegal, he said, "I will not push for that. That's not on my agenda, and that's not been an objective of the people of the state of Indiana."
